The brief for this design competition was to design a new home for a modern, inner city church with vibrant multi-purpose space for the use of the wider community.
Context Architects’ bold design turned traditional building layout on its head, creating an interactive environment within a flexible space in which corridors become lanes, foyers become a plaza, and structured static rooms become obsolete.
In a plaza, people can meet, artists can exhibit and bands play. With no fixed entry and multiple access areas, links are created with the surrounding city. The life of the community is arranged around a coffee shop, offices, lounge areas, studios, and a park. The spine of the development is designed to be able to be opened as a pedestrian laneway or indoor market, intriguing passersby and welcoming newcomers.
Although the design was not realised, it was an example of a visionary plan to enliven an urban space and redefine it for future generations.
